Black Sabbath's 7th release 1976's: TECHNICAL ECSTASY
Here is where the wheels start to fall off the wagon for our heroes!
The Sabbs are all doing way too much cocaine (and drinking,and smoking
and God knows what).
TECHNICAL ECSTASY is a record with but a scant few highlights.
Those highlights include some fantastic guitar playing from Iommi, and a suprise vocal from drummer Bill Ward.
They continue further into the proggy synth of their last 2 albums
to ill effect, overall the song writing is weak and the production
is heavy handed.
The disc starts off well enough with a 2nd rate rocker "Back Street Kids"
then into "You Won't Change Me" which is again just ok.
Track 3 "It's Alright" is the gem in this lot, but sounds very out of place on a Sabbath record. It features Bill Ward singing and is very melodic and
Beatles-like and in fact sounds like a lost Ringo Starr tune.
Song #4 "Gypsy" is awful and seems like Iommi/Butler wrote it with
Supertramp in mind.
In some ways "All Moving Parts Stand Still" is the best song on the record
with it's funky bass line and syncopated vocals but is a little too long for it's own good.
"Rock and Roll Doctor" is straight ahead generic boogie-rock and is instantly
forgetable (but was oddly revived live by the Ian Gillan fronted version of Sabbath).
"She's Gone" with it's finger-picked guitar and orchestral strings sound very similar to some future Ozzy solo songs, but goes nowhere and is tedious.
"Dirty Women" is another forgetable track ,but for a very good guitar lead. It's one that inexplicably re-emerges for the reunion shows 20 years later.
TECHNICAL ECSTASY is really only for the die hard Sabbath fans and completists.
If that's not you (although it IS me) then it's difficult to recomend, and is certainly not a good starting place to explore the joys of one of rock music's best, most influential groups.
